Day 17: Happy Bloomsday!

June 16, 2009

No, I didn't make it up. Bloomsday is a holiday celebrated in Dublin, and perhaps in other cities. It celebrates the writings of famous Irish author, James Joyce, and in particular his work, Ulysses. The main character, Leopold Bloom, spends the day (the length of the book) of June 16, going around Dublin. Bloomsday is celebrated by recreating events during Joyce's life or by retracing the exact footsteps of Bloom.

Ulysses was on my list of books to read before I got to Dublin (I didn't manage to finish a single book). Therefore, I couldn't really participate in Bloomsday celebrations. I did want to take the walking tour which retraces Bloom's journey, but they were all during my work hours and I couldn't leave. So I don't even have any pictures related to Joyce or anything from Ulysses. It's quite disappointing - people sometimes dress up in clothes from the era. I didn't see anyone like that on the way to work. However, it did fall on a Tuesday, so I'm sure some people didn't get to participate before of work or school.

Although I didn't get to celebrate Bloomsday, I did go to my first Irish pub, The Bleeding Horse. It is right down our street and it's a very nice inside. We went as a group - nine girls from our house. We sat there talking and drinking (I ordered a sparkling water) of random things.

That was all I managed to accomplish during the evening. Again, not a very interesting day. Work does make me lazy - I don't feel like doing anything but going straight home and taking some rest.
